Had It All

The story of a life with its roots in rural East Yorkshire.

When I was a young boy in fields that I would roam
I did not need to wonder if the road would take me home
On footpaths and the bridleways of the country that I owned
Seemed to me I had it all seemed to me I’d never be alone

Valleys and mountains came underneath my heels
Over and over till feet became two wheels
On chalken wold and open moor sun and racing wind I’d feel
Seemed to me I had it all seemed to me it always would be real

Come the man I played the game in days so hard and long
Comfort came a calling wheels turned into song
And I placed my trust in melody told myself that I could do no wrong
Seemed to me I had it all seemed to me I’d have it all alone

They say the time has come to fade away and take a bow
And put aside the playful things of youth
But Father Time’s not operating in the here and now
The present seems to be the only truth

When I was a young boy in fields that I would roam
I did not need to wonder if the road would take me home
On footpaths and the bridleways of the country that I owned
Seemed to me I had it all seemed to me I’d never be alone
